Mysterious debris (deer hair!)

 I came across these tufts of hair while patrolling the yard.

They seem rabbity, or non-domestic cat. I did see some rabbit tracks a few days ago, when we still had snow.




Whatever they're from, I don't think said beast was having a good time. No signs of bloodshed nearby, though.

Update: I've had a few fellows opine that this is deer hair. A couple are hunters and have personal close-up experience.

We had a pretty good windstorm yesterday. This root mass looks freshly lifted. Nice reflection of the dangling bit of ice:


I believe this black spruce is freshly fallen. I did hear a big crack when the wind was howling.

New birdNET case requires math

  Instead of using an RPi3, I decided to stay with the RPi4 for birdNET, in anticipation of it also hosting a camera and media player for when there are people outside socializing.  Pi4's really need active cooling. This is an old CPU cooler fan running off 5 volts instead of the rated 12v. It is quite quiet as a result. I might raise that voltage. The CPU is reporting 50C, and previously I had it down to around 40-45C with the case open. Or maybe drill more holes to improve air flow through the case. The reducing shroud to fit the fan on the case is made from a yogurt container and my ghetto 3dprinter (aka hot glue gun) welded the three pieces together. Had to remember how to project a section of a cone onto 2D!

removing H2O, not just Rn?

 We did a 3-month test which showed 204 Bequerel/cubic metre of radon in our basement. The threshold for leisurely mitigation is 200. Argh!  And apparently, when selling a house, you must disclose any information you have about radon. So we got a radon mitigation system installed.  Carefree Properties professional installation It depressurizes under the foundation slab, and blows the radon-laden air it collects out the side of the house. A possible  side effect is sub-slab humidity will also get blown out, and stop rising through cracks into our basement. 'Way too early to tell, but this data from the crawlspace humidity sensor is encouraging: The crawlspace humidity dropped slightly when the radon system started, but rose higher than the baseline earlier in the day after I turned off the crawlspace dehumidifier.  But it isn't still rising.  The dehumidifer costs about $250 per year to run, and our experience is the equipment breaks every 2-3 years. Insulated the outlets - now what?

We had an energy assessment done ten days ago, in preparation for bigger energy efficiency projects that are partly financed by the governments. The assessor reminded me that insulating electrical outlets is a good idea. I splurged $12 on a 30 pack of these: and installed about 25  30 of them in our exterior wall outlets and switches. (Ooops, just realized I missed some switches!)  The information superhighway says these will cut our energy consumption by 10% or more. Sounds optimistic to me. I should be able to calculate energy consumed per degree day though.  According to my local weather data, there were 3600 heating degree-days (based on 18C) from October 1 2022 to today, September 30 2023. We consumed about 2500 liters of heating oil over that year. Previously I've figured out that we use about a third for domestic hot water. 😮 A little ciphering suggests we used about 1670 liters, or 65 GJ to heat our house.
